Amyloidosis
A group of rare diseases caused by abnormal protein deposits in organs.
Definition
Amyloidosis is a rare disease in which abnormal proteins called amyloid build up in tissues and organs, interfering with their normal function. It can affect the heart, kidneys, liver, and nervous system. Because symptoms are diverse and nonspecific, diagnosis is frequently delayed.
