The immune system's protective response to injury or infection.

Definition

Inflammation is the immune system's natural response to injury, infection, or irritation, and it normally helps the body heal. When inflammation becomes chronic, however, it can contribute to autoimmune and other diseases. Recognizing the difference between helpful and harmful inflammation is key to many treatments.
