Definition
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), commonly called lupus, is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks multiple organ systems. It can cause a distinctive butterfly-shaped facial rash, joint pain, fatigue, and kidney problems. No two cases are alike, which makes diagnosis challenging.
