Definition
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system destroys the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas, so the body can no longer regulate blood sugar. It typically appears in childhood or young adulthood and is not caused by lifestyle. It requires lifelong insulin therapy, though technology continues to improve management.
