Definition
Ulcerative colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease that causes long-lasting inflammation and ulcers in the lining of the colon and rectum. Symptoms include bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and urgency. Unlike Crohn's disease, it is limited to the colon, and it carries an increased risk of colon cancer over time.
